Reflections: Miss Maine 1935 - Wedding Bells, The Final Chapter
Shirley Stanton Maxell grew up always knowing in her heart that her adoptive father was her real father, her birth father. She didn't need proof, she wasn't interested in finding her birth mother, nor was she interested if she had any siblings. Her father Oscar was an elected state representative for Maine and held the position for many many years. He was also responsible for keeping the state dry, alcohol free. Oscar was always promoting the state and what it had to offer to attract those "from away" to visit, live and vacation in their beautiful home state of Maine.MaineLearn more
J. Courtney Sullivan When it came time for for re-election, Shirley was right there to assist her father in his campaigning efforts. She was even written about in the newspaper regarding this endeavor and referred to as a socialite.
Shirley met her future husband, Cecil James Lockhard, not in Maine, but in St. Petersburg, Florida working as a chauffeur. Shirley was spending the winter months there as usual with her parents. Cecil was originally from Canada. They began dating.

J. Courtney Sullivan Cecil brought her home to New Brunswick, Canada to meet his parents and nine siblings on their farm located on what was known as Lockhard Hill. Shirley was made to feel so welcomed by them all, especially Cecil's mother. Such a wonderful large close family, something she had never experienced before. They fell in love and married.
